The USL Championship delivered an almost absurd volume of late drama — stoppage-time winners, stunning comebacks, and a nine-goal thriller that will be talked about for years — while USL League One contributed its own share of gut-punch finishes, including a double stoppage-time brace that defies belief. Standings remain tight across both divisions, and this week’s results did everything but clarify who’s pulling ahead.

Editor’s pick: Nine goals, a hat trick, and a winner in the seventh minute of stoppage time — Colorado Springs’ comeback from 4-3 down is simply the most unhinged match of the 2026 USL Championship season, and it isn’t particularly close.
There are matches you watch and forget by Monday. Then there are matches like this one. Loudoun United and Colorado Springs combined for nine goals at Segra Field on September 4th, producing the kind of scoreline that makes you check the app twice just to make sure you’re reading it right.
Edward Davis was the story for the Switchbacks — a hat trick that put Colorado Springs in the conversation and gave them the foundation to chase a result even when things looked bleak. And bleak it did look: at 4-3 down, with regulation ticking away, most traveling fans would have been quietly reconciling themselves to a narrow, maddening defeat. The Switchbacks had other ideas.
Then came the 90+7th minute. Khori Bennett — in the kind of moment that defines seasons — buried a winner to complete one of the most jaw-dropping comebacks the Championship has produced in recent memory. From 4-3 down, deep into additional time, Colorado Springs found a way. Final score: 5-4 in the most dramatic fashion imaginable.
For Loudoun, it’s a gut punch that will sting for weeks. They did enough to win a normal soccer match several times over. For Colorado Springs, Bennett’s name goes into the club’s folklore, and Davis’s hat trick gives the Switchbacks a genuine boost in confidence at a critical point of the season. Whatever the standings implications, this one was simply unmissable.

Miami FC and Pittsburgh Riverhounds served up a two-phase thriller that saw both teams find the net after regulation, but it was Daltyn Knutson’s equalizer in the 100th minute that left jaws on the floor. The Riverhounds had clawed ahead in stoppage time only for Miami to immediately respond, making this 2-2 draw one of those results where both sets of fans somehow feel equally robbed and relieved. Chaotic doesn’t begin to cover it.
USL Championship — Charleston Battery vs Hartford Athletic | 2026-09-02
Hartford Athletic have been making a habit of late drama this week, and it started here at Charleston. The Battery were reduced to ten men by a red card — the moment that flipped the entire contest — and Barry Coffey made them pay in the cruelest way possible, burying a winner in the 90+7th minute to complete Hartford’s comeback. There was controversy, there was grit, and there was a scoreline that Charleston will want to forget as quickly as possible.
USL Championship — Detroit City FC vs Hartford Athletic | 2026-09-05
Hartford were at it again just three days later. Detroit City thought they had stolen three points when they went ahead in the 94th minute — the kind of late goal that should, by rights, end the argument. Augustine Williams disagreed entirely, equalizing for Hartford in the 100th minute to earn a draw that felt almost impossible. That’s back-to-back matches this week where Hartford scored past the 90th minute. Someone in that locker room must be made of ice.
USL League One — Charlotte Independence vs Portland Hearts of Pine | 2026-09-02
League One delivered its own moment of pure madness on September 2nd. Charlotte trailed Portland Hearts of Pine 2-1 with the match seemingly done, and then Stéfano Pinho happened. He scored in the 90+6th minute to level — and then, as if that weren’t enough, he scored again in the 90+8th minute to win it. A brace entirely within stoppage time, flipping a deficit into three points. Portland will want to review whatever happened defensively in those two minutes for a very long time.

USL League One — Sarasota Paradise vs Spokane Velocity FC | 2026-09-05 — Mark Hernández’s 90+4’ equalizer earned Spokane a point in Sarasota, leaving the home faithful thoroughly deflated after their side had seemingly done enough to win.
USL Championship — Rhode Island FC vs Louisville City FC | 2026-09-05 — Eight yellow cards flew in a feisty, physical 1-1 draw that felt less like a soccer match and more like a negotiated ceasefire that nearly collapsed on several occasions.
USL Championship — Las Vegas Lights FC vs New Mexico United | 2026-09-05 — New Mexico came from behind to claim a gutsy 2-1 road win in Las Vegas, with Kipp Keller’s 79th-minute strike completing a resolute away performance.
